RIP Yvonne Craig Wed, 19 Aug 2015 23:46:25 +0000 I was settling into my office this morning when my husband’s text reached me that Yvonne Craig had passed away.  She was many things, but most remember her as the kick-ass, smart and beautiful Barbara Gordon/Batgirl on the 1960’s Batman TV show.

The show had long been cancelled by the time I was born, but I was introduced to her via syndication.  I could watch the exploits of Batgirl every afternoon, and I was always disappointed when the episode didn’t feature Batgirl.

Yvonne Craig Batgirl by Lin Workman. Used with permission.

The exploits of Yvonne Craig’s Barbara Gordon and Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman formed the basis for my childhood fandom and gave me role models.  These weren’t damsels in distress or the love interests.  They were big-damn heroes.  They, more often that not, saved the guys.  They were smart and not ashamed to show their intelligence or their compassion.

As an adult, discovering Barbara Gordon’s rebirth as Oracle sparked my renewed interest in comics.

I never got to meet Ms. Craig, but my husband did.  He has always raved about how sweet and friendly she was.

Few have had the impact on generations of girls that she did.  Batgirl lives on to inspire future generations, and for that, we all owe Yvonne Craig a huge debt.

Welcome to the Suicide Squad Mon, 13 Jul 2015 21:34:39 +0000 The Suicide Squad comics were some of my first forays into comics a few years ago, and they hold a special place in this fangirl’s heart.  As a result, I’ve been a bit apprehensive about the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, but I’m feeling better today after Warner Brothers officially released the trailer shown to the Hall H crowd this weekend in San Diego.

First Impressions

– AMANDA FREAKIN’ WALLER!!!!  Ok, I had to get the fangirling out of my system for a moment.  Viola Davis is an inspired choice to play The Wall.

– Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is the star of the trailer.  Lots of shots of Harley, and they all looked good.  I’m still not a big fan of the costume they’ve given this version of Harley, but it could have been a helluva lot worse.

– We get glimpses of the other Squad members.  Will Smith’s Deadshot receives the most screen time after Waller and Harley in the trailer.

– Oh yeah, we get our first good look of Jared Leto’s Joker in action.  I don’t really give a damn about the Joker, but YMMV.

We attended for the first time last year, and we had a great time.  Lin will be setup in Artist Alley while I run around the con having fun and getting my picture taken with the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann.  Be sure to stop by and say hello if you are attending Con K.

In other Whovian news, the Series 9 trailer premiered this weekend at San Diego.  Is it September 19th yet?

MidSouthCon 33 Thu, 05 Mar 2015 01:40:13 +0000 Spring is almost here, even if we are in the midst of yet another ice storm as I type this, and that means MidSouthCon is around the corner.  It looks like our schedules have been finalized, and I will be a moderator and a panelist again this year.

My schedule is below.  The entire schedule is available online at

MSC 33 Schedule

Two of my panels include my artist husband, Lin Workman. When not in panels or wandering the halls, we will be hanging out at the Memphis Star Wars FanForce table. Stop by and say hello!

It’s Alive! Fri, 21 Mar 2014 14:53:27 +0000 Its-Alive

Yes, folks.  The blog lives!  Life and work have conspired to keep me away, but it’s time to have some fun again.

I attended my 1st con in about a year a couple of weeks ago, which I’ll talk about in a separate post.  Today marks the start of MidSouthCon 32 in Memphis.  I, as well as my husband Lin, are guests this year.  Both of my panels are Saturday in Director’s Row 5.

When not on panels, I will probably be hanging out at the SMT FanForce table.  Stop by and say hello.

Bits and Bobs Mon, 04 Feb 2013 22:21:45 +0000 Bits and bobs from around the interwebz:

  • I’m sure most of you have heard by now, but JJ Abrams will be directing the next Star Wars movie.  It’s still way too early in the development process for script or casting news.  I’m not sure how I feel about Abrams getting the gig, but I did enjoy his version of Star Trek.  I’m cautiously optimistic.
  • Doctor Who returns March 30!
  • John Jackson Miller announced on Facebook that Christie Golden will also be attending MidSouthCon this March. Ms. Golden has written novels for Star Wars, Star Trek and World of Warcraft in addition to her original fiction.
  • While at the comics shop last week, we saw where JJM will also be at the Horn Lake, MS branch of the First Regional Library on March 20 for a book signing while he’s in town for MidSouthCon.  Costumes are encouraged.
  • SUPERMAN: UNBOUND will be the next DC Universe Animated movie.  Yay, the Superman-Batman movie rotation remains unbroken.  :/  The trailer is here.
  • Deadline is reporting that Revenge’s Emily VanCamp has been cast as the female lead in Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier.  While who she is portraying hasn’t been announced, she sure looks like Sharon Carter to me.  ScarJo’s Black Widow better have a cameo in this movie, Marvel.  I will not be amused if this does not happen.
  • Last, but not least, the “extended” preview of Iron Man 3

Happy 92nd Birthday, Noel Neill Sun, 25 Nov 2012 17:20:06 +0000 Today marks the 92nd birthday of Noel Neill, who is best known for her portrayal of Lois Lane in The Adventures of Superman in the 1950’s.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Noel, and she is one of the most gracious ladies I have ever met.  She retired from public appearances after a bad fall in 2010, but she is enjoying retirement in her new home in Metropolis, IL.

Sketch Book: Wonder Woman, Batgirl Wed, 22 Aug 2012 15:27:39 +0000 I didn’t go to Superman Celebration this year, but my husband did. Being a good geek husband, he brought me presents.

First is a Wonder Woman sketch by George Perez.

He also brought back a print of Huntress & Power Girl from World’s Finest that Perez drew.

Second is a Batgirl sketch by Terry Beatty.

RIP Jim Henson and Other Links Wed, 16 May 2012 19:27:43 +0000 Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the passing of Jim Henson.  Check out my husband’s post about his 1st trip to Leland, MS, Jim’s birthplace, with our friend and puppeteer Kevin Williams.  Together, they took this picture that is found all over the interwebs (usually uncredited & often defaced, but that’s another rant for another day.)

In happier news, today is Yvonne Craig’s birthday.  The original Barbara Gordon is 75 years old.  Happy Birthday!

In other happy news, the Reading With Pictures Kickstarter campaign has exceeded its goal of $65,000 to publish The Graphic Textbook.  Reading With Pictures, founded by our friend Josh Elder, is committed to getting comics into classrooms as educational tools.  It’s a fantastic organization, and it’s not too late to contribute.
